Course Description
This module includes a brief overview of the physiology of gas exchange and partial pressures, along with steps toward rapid blood gas interpretation. You will also gain a clinical understanding of metabolic acidosis-alkalosis and respiratory acidosis-alkalosis including exercises in differentiation. It also includes a case scenario that puts into practice what the learner understands of the material.

  • Explain the physiology of gas exchange at the alveolar level
  • Describe the process of lactic acidosis and the levels of compensation
  • Describe the physiology, etiology, and causes of metabolic acidosis-alkalosis and respiratory acidosis- alkalosis
  • Perform basic blood gas interpretation based on the steps described within this module
  • Describe the REEDA approach to incision assessment
  • Describe potential corrective actions for a pH that is either acidotic and alkalotic
  • Describe procedures for Allen test, insertion, removal and care of an arterial line
