Course Description
This module includes a comprehensive guide to Understanding Mechanical Ventilation. The importance of airway protection is stressed and non invasive and invasive methods of ventilation are discussed. Causes of respiratory failure and indications for intubation and mechanical ventilation are offered as well as the goals of mechanical ventilation, modes of ventilation, and trouble shooting tips for ventilator alarms. This module has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the critical care patient. Understanding Mechanical Ventilation is also a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of critical care or emergency nursing.

Course Objectives
  • Describe respiratory failure and the manifestations of inability to oxygenate and/or ventilate
  • Explain the parameters of airway protection assessment
  • Compare and contrast airway resistance, gas exchange impediments, and inability to ventilate
  • Explain the principles and goals of mechanical ventilation, modes of ventilation and considerations in the choice of mode of delivery
  • Briefly discuss the heart sounds and relate the sites of auscultation to the underlying cardiac valves
  • Compare and contrast ventilator alarms and discuss trouble shooting tips for each
  • Describe E Tube care and the importance of maintaining oral hygiene
  • Discuss the importance of sedation and analgesia for the intubated patient
