The goal of this module is to provide basic information on Handling Numbers and Performing Calculations and their importance in a pharmaceutical analytical laboratory.

Learning Objectives

1004NC- LO- 01: Identify important terms, applicable symbols and abbreviations, and concepts related to Handling Numbers and Performing Calculations (HNPC).

1004NC- LO- 02: Identify acceptable techniques for calculating and recording results specific to:
  • Significant figures
  • Number rounding
  • Reporting solution concentrations

1004NC- LO- 03: Apply the rules (or acceptable techniques) for using significant figures and for rounding numbers in the process of:
  • Recording raw data obtained from a technique
  • Performing a calculation

1004NC- LO- 04: Given a problem that is related to HNPC, identify potential problems caused by human error resulting from:
  • Recording errors
  • Entry errors
  • Number rounding errors
  • Incorrect significant figures

1004NC- LO- 05: Identify the appropriate actions to resolve a laboratory problem associated with HNPC resulting from:
  • Recording errors
  • Entry errors
  • Number rounding errors
  • Incorrect significant figures

1004NC- LO- 06: Identify the importance of HNPC in the pharmaceutical industry with respect to the Safety, Identity, Strength, Purity, and Quality of products.

1004NC- LO- 07: Given examples of HNPC, differentiate between acceptable (good) and unacceptable (poor) practices including:
  • Poor documentation of calculations
  • Inadequate review of data

1004NC- LO- 08: Given a question related to HNPC that could be asked by a new laboratory analyst, provide an answer that is consistent with standard industry and scientific practices.

1004NC- LO- 09: Identify how to properly calculate the molarity of a solution.

1004NC- LO- 10: Identify how to properly calculate the normality of a solution.
